    Heartland Program and Innovation Center


    Impact in the Greater Kansas City Area

    Youth and families in the greater Kansas City area are served by the Camp Fire USA Heartland Program and Innovation Center. Collaborating with more than a dozen local partners, over five hundred youth and their families benefit weekly from the various out-of-school-time and self-reliance programs in addition to service-learning and outdoor education opportunities.

    Camp Fire USA Heartland Program and Innovation Center serves as an innovation center to beta test promising practices from other Camp Fire councils, and new programs and curricula, establishing best practices to disseminate nationally.

    Day Camp at Camp Lake of the Woods

    Ages: 6-11

    These popular camps for boys and girls run Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Six one-week, themed sessions are offered and campers may choose one or more. Campers will spend their days hiking, swimming, creating crafts, and cooking out over a camp fire. Morning and afternoon snacks are provided. Campers need to bring their own lunch. (Refrigerators provided.)

    Cost: $190.00 per week per camper.

    Early Bird Discount of $10.00 per session until March 30, 2012

    June 11-15Rollin' in a New Summer:  Whether you're new to camp or have been waiting all school year to be outside for the whole day, this session is for you! Experience a variety pack of great outdoor activities. Go swimming, make crafts, try archery, hike on the trail, and more!

    June 25-29:  Explore the Arts:  Creativity will be extreme this week! Express yourself through painting, drawing, music, and acting! Your imagination will sprout with new ideas and projects this session.

    July 9-13:  League of Superheroes:  We'll creat our own league of superheroes with their own super-powers!

    July 16-20:  Aquatic Adventure:  This week will be all about water and the different ways we can stay cool with H2O fun. From swimming to sprinklers and many water games we will have a wet and wonderful time.

    July 23-27:  Time Machine:  Join us for some "old school" fun! Turn back time to learn how to make your own ice cream, cook over the fire using a stick, try knot tying and discover how to build a shelter in the forest.

    July 30-August 3: Outback:  Learn some great outdoor skills as we learn and explore Camp Lake of the Woods. Use a compass, build a campfire and travel the forest for outdoor adventures.

    Teen Programs at Day Camp!!!

    Ages 12-14

    Cost: $190.00 per week per camper.

    Early Bird Discount of $10.00 per session until March 30, 2012 

    Teens in Action is a separate program designed for teens to have cool experiences while at Day Camp. Six, one week camps for teens are purposefully small (from 8-10 boys and girls) to encourage interaction and relationship building between campers and staff.  The teens spend their week together hiking, swimming, learning outdoor skills, creating art and participating in other camp activities. Teens will also have an opportunity to participate in a service project or in the community during the week.  The group will be given options and they will decide on how they want to desing their week and their service project.

    Ages: 8-14

    Cost:  $280 per camper

    Sunday 3:00 p.m. checkin and Friday 3:00 p.m. checkout.

    Held at the Rotary Youth Camp in Lee's Summit, Missouri.

    This year, Camp Shawnee campers will experience their week of adventures at a new location - the 27-acre Rotary Youth Camp. However, all activities are back for another year-cookouts, hiking, creative arts, swimming, outdoor living skills, archery, canoeing, and living the cabin life. From Sunday afternoon unitl Friday afternoon campers will truly have an amzaing residential camp experinece.

    Program Opportunities

    Before- and After-School Programs
    Camp Fire USA Heartland Program and Innovation Center partners with the Kansas City, Kansas Unified School District and the Greater Kansas City Boys and Girls Club to provide fun, engaging and outcome-rich programs in before- and after-school settings.

    Club Programs
    Club programs meet approximately once a month and engage youth and families in small group settings. These groups complete Camp Fire USA curriculum, participate in service-learning activities and go on group adventures, learning and exploring together.

    The Adventure Fitness club is designed for children and youth with disabilities to participate in physical fitness and life skills activities. The majority of the participants are blind or visually impaired while others have physical or developmental disabilities.

    Teens In Action Programs:
    Middle, high school, and college students work through a service-learning curriculum while being advised by a trained adult staff member or volunteers. Teens are given the tools and empowered to make a real difference in their communities.

    Hold On to Health and Community Education Programs:
    Health and safety education workshops and activities designed to ensure kids have the skills and information they need to grow into self-reliant adults.
